Alicia Diefenbach worked with the Washington State government's Department of Financial Institutions, investigating financial crimes. Helping victims was good. Helping people not become victims, she decided, was better. In 2003, she launched Consumer University to do just that.
Consumer University offers numerous programs to help people increase their financial literacy. Salal partners with Alicia Diefenbach, Consumer University, and four other Washington State credit unions to bring financial education to high schoolers. In the six years since the program was launched, Consumer University has taught more than 20,000 Western Washington high school students about credit, debt, saving, and identity theft.
